Local returning Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) service members and their families are invited to attend the Hampton VA Medical Center’s “Welcome Home American Hero” event Sept. 30.

“It’s important that our returning service members know that the community appreciates the sacrifices they have made for our community and to know that we are here to help them,” said Julia Allaman, OEF/OIF/OND manager.  “There are more than 35 organizations signed up to share their information with them ~ the entire event is in conjunction with a job fair.”

The annual event, which will take place on the medical center campus in the gazebo area and buildings 36 and 83 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is one way for Veterans Affairs to thank them for their dedication and service to their country.  There will be a short recognition ceremony from 11-11:30 a.m. with a family barbecue picnic immediately following.  Several door prizes will also be offered throughout the day’s festivities.

Allaman explained that the main mission of the OEF/OIF/OND Program is to ensure a smooth transition of the Nation’s service members from active duty service to the VHA Health Care system.  Participants are encouraged to visit booths, pick up brochures and discovering the countless services and programs available to them ~ both at the Hampton VAMC and the surrounding communities during the Welcome Home.
