Giving back to disabled Veterans is just part of the mission for many Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapters throughout the Hampton Roads area.  One tradition of giving back has been when local chapters have hosted the DAV Olympic Games at the Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC).

“It is our chance to give back to disabled Veterans,” said James Walton, DAV Chapter 2 commander. “This is just one of many events we do each year at Hampton to help fulfill our mission.”

This year’s games had to be moved indoors due to bad weather, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of more than fifty Veterans who competed in this year’s games.

Cornhole, Golf Putting, Checkers, and indoor Shot Put were some of the games that volunteers from the local DAV chapter coordinated for some of Hampton’s Veterans.

Sitting in her wheel chair, Pamela Raspberry, a twenty-two year U.S. Army Veteran, grasped a shot put that was specially adapted for indoors and gave it a toss.  Raspberry flung the lightly filled bag into the air.  The shot put landed 5 feet from where she sat.

Beaming with joy, Raspberry said that the games were a lot of fun for her to play.

The Annual DAV Olympic Games provide disabled Veterans and local DAV chapter volunteers the opportunity to share smiles, good food, and fun times.
